Is Reiki for Me?
As some of you know, I'm a Reiki practitioner as well as a massage therapist. In fact, practicing Reiki is what led me to become a massage therapist. While doing Reiki I found that I kept wanting to move my client's arms, legs, and head. I wanted to squeeze their muscles and soft tissue to release more energy even though manual manipulation is not a part of a Reiki treatment. So I thought I should learn how to do that properly by going to massage school!
So What Exactly is Reiki?
You've probably heard of it before as more and more hospitals are using Reiki as a form of complementary care, especially for patients with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy. A 2008 USA Today article reported that in 2007 15% of U.S. hospitals (over 800) offered Reiki as a regular part of patient services. (Reiki.org).
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese form of energy work that balances the energy system in the body. Everyone is made up of energy...their life force, called "chi" in Chinese, or "ki" in Japanese. Practitioners of Reiki believe that when your energy becomes unable to move freely or is weakened by illness or chronic stress, it can make you feel unwell.
How Will a Reiki Treatment Help Me?
A Reiki practitioner has been "attuned" by a Reiki Master to be able to feel where there might be a build up of energy in your body that could be causing problems for you. They do this by laying their hands either on you or right above you in different spots corresponding with your chakra system.
Think of being attuned as becoming a very clear radio station, except it's energy not music you're playing.
Getting Reiki will help you feel balanced, clear, calm, and extremely relaxed.
Working with energy is subtle but substantial. Even a small shift in your energy can bring about large changes in your physical body.
What Does it Feel Like to Get Reiki?
Some people feel a comforting warmth or tingling throughout their body or just on the spot that is being worked on.
Some people don't feel anything physical, but they have an emotional release. I've had clients laugh or cry without knowing why. We store emotions in our body. Emotions are also energy. If Reiki releases energy, it releases emotions. Do not feel embarrassed if you start to laugh or cry or experience any other type of emotional release. These are all positive outcomes of a Reiki treatment.
Some people don't feel anything at all except pure relaxation.
Some even fall asleep or reach that wonderful meditative state where the mind can relax and recharge.
What Can I Expect for My Reiki Treatment?
If this is your first treatment, come with an open mind and the desire to relax.
You will stay in your clothes throughout the treatment, but be covered with a blanket for warmth.
We will have a brief discussion before your treatment to go over any physical or emotional symptoms you might be having or anything you would like me to focus on during the treatment.
If you have any questions, always ask them. Even if it's in the middle of your treatment.
